The 'Real World' vs. the Multiverse

The 'Real World' vs. the Multiverse
In the 'real world'...

You don’t talk to that cute, curious person in the Subway, mostly because they’re wearing headphones. But even if they weren’t wearing headphones – what are you doing talking to a total stranger? Are you, like, weird or something?

In the Multiverse…

It’s not crazy to talk to the other person. You can discover the ways in which you underestimate people’s desire to connect. And finally acknowledge that we’re all just elements hurtling through space, looking for other elements to form covalent bonds with (and maybe form compounds? Or is that taking the metaphor too far…?)

In the ‘real world’…

You worry about how you might strike up a conversation with someone you’d like to connect with. Do you start by asking them ‘what they do?’ No, scratch that, that’s so demeaning. Maybe ask them what their spirit animal is? No, that’s lame. Why does every interaction have to feel so tiresome, like you’re constantly rehearsing for the role we think you’re meant to play?

In the Multiverse…

You are both taken care of by me, Carla. I love to ask a mix of silly and deep questions – questions that you might not think to ask – like ‘when was the last time you climbed a tree?’ ‘Do you believe in spirits or creatures that we can’t see?’ and ‘where does self worth come from?’ There are thousands more. Oh, and did I mention that I love to use music to strike up conversations? Even...spontaneous dance parties?

In the ‘real world’…

Your subconscious brain effortlessly picks up on a collection of cues – the logos on their clothing, their gender, the color of their skin, the way they style their beard, their body shape, fitness, any signs of aging, religious regalia, asymmetrical features, and so forth – and makes a split-second determination of whether this person is even ‘worth’ your time.

In the Multiverse…

Everyone is worth your time because there’s no ‘one’ there to judge; only a person to be seen. An assembly of unseen voices, dancing together in conversation, discovering that there is more to them than they could ever possibly imagine.
